Both Jonathan David of Juventus and Tani Oluwaseyi of Villarreal scored important goals for their clubs on Wednesday.
David buried an insurance marker for Juventus in the 72nd minute, just five minutes after Weston McKennie opened the scoring against Cyprus’ Pafos FC.
The Ottawa native’s goal sealed a 2–0 win, moving Juventus to 2-3-1 in Champions League play and 17th in the table.
Meanwhile, Oluwaseyi scored his first-ever Champions League goal in the 56th minute for Villarreal, tying their match 2–2 against FC Copenhagen. Oluwaseyi, who moved to Mississauga, Ont. from Nigeria when he was 10-years-old, came on as a second-half substitution.
Villarreal ultimately fell 3-2 after forward Andreas Cornelius scored in added time.
Fellow Canadian Tajon Buchanan was also featured for Villarreal. He played the entire first half before being subbed off for Ilias Akhomach in the second half.
He had one shot and completed 13 passes in the match.
Villarreal are tied for last in the Champions League standings, holding a 0-1-5 record alongside FK Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan.
